The Philadelphia Flyers went to a shootout last night against the New Jersey Devils. There was a lot of controversy over this goal scored by Danny Briere of the Flyers during the shootout. Briere came to a complete stop making Devils goalie Johan Hedberg dive for the puck. Briere then skated around Hedberg to score an open net goal. The goal was highly questioned by the Devils as they claimed he cannot come to a complete stop before continuing to dribble.
The rule states that "The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent's goal line
and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete. No goal can
be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the
goal post or crossbar, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the
goal), and any time the puck crosses the goal line or comes to a complete stop, the shot shall be considered complete." Rule 24.2
After you watch the video you can judge for yourself. The rule to me says that the puck must keep in motion, "towards the opponent's goal line." Yea it never came to a complete stop, but he did move the puck away from the goal line. Once the player stopped he made the puck go in reverse then continued around the goalie. To me that is a no goal. The ref's reviewed the goal and kept the call on the ice of a goal. I think the pinstripes missed one there.
Oh yea, the goal ended up not meaning anything since the Devils won in the shootout anyway.
