I have watched this about 10 times and can't figure out what the hell Verlander was doing. The only reason to step off the mound and throw home would be if a runner was stealing home. Maybe Verlander meant to throw to first after he stepped off but had a mental breakdown. Whatever it was he got a free throw at the batter without getting his ass beat so I guess we have to applaud him for that.
